Professional Stoma Care Enables Your Parent to Live with Confidence

What Stoma Care Involves

Stoma care means supporting a parent who has a colostomy (opening in the colon for bowel output), ileostomy (opening in the small intestine), or urostomy (opening in the urinary system). Our carers are trained in stoma management — changing pouches at appropriate intervals, cleaning the stoma and surrounding skin, monitoring for skin irritation or breakdown, and managing output discretely and hygienically. We understand that stoma care is sensitive and potentially embarrassing for many people. We manage it professionally and matter-of-factly, treating it as a normal health management need, not something shameful. We also support your parent to manage their own stoma care to the extent they are able, coaching them through each step so they retain independence and confidence.

Preventing Skin Damage and Infection

The skin around a stoma is vulnerable to breakdown, irritation, and infection if not managed carefully. We use appropriate cleaning solutions and techniques that protect skin health. We ensure pouches are fitted correctly so they do not leak or cause irritation. We monitor for skin damage, redness, or signs of infection and report these immediately to your GP or stoma nurse. We also manage output appropriately — disposing of pouches hygienically, managing odour, and maintaining your parent’s environment as fresh and clean. Our care coordinator Stacey Cole, with 17 years in complex care, ensures every carer understands your parent’s specific stoma type and any individual factors. Every stoma check is logged in OpenPass, so we have detailed records of skin condition and any concerns. We liaise with stoma nurses or GPs as needed to optimise stoma and skin management.
