Medication Administration Prevents Serious Health Risks and Improves Outcomes

What Medication Administration Involves

Medication administration means our trained carer supports or administers your parent’s medications. This might mean unlocking a medication box, handing your parent their pills and watching them take them, or in some cases — if your parent cannot swallow — administering medication through other routes as prescribed by the GP. This is a regulated task requiring specific training. Our carers complete training in medication management, understanding medication interactions, side effects, and safe administration procedures. In Gloucester, we support families with complex medication regimens — parents on ten or more medications, medications with specific timing requirements, or medications that require monitoring. We work closely with GPs and pharmacists to understand your parent’s medication needs and ensure nothing is missed.

Preventing Medication Errors and Health Complications

Medication errors in older adults cause approximately 125,000 deaths per year and account for at least 1 out of 131 outpatient deaths and 1 out of 39 hospital admissions. Many of these errors are preventable. Our medication administration service eliminates common errors — missed doses, wrong timing, wrong dosage, or dangerous drug interactions. We also monitor for side effects or adverse reactions and report these immediately to your GP. Every medication administration is logged in our OpenPass system, which our care coordinator Stacey Cole reviews daily. If a medication is not appropriate, if your parent is experiencing side effects, or if there are interactions between medications, we escalate this to your family and your parent’s healthcare providers. Our 17 years of experience in care means we spot patterns and concerns that might otherwise go unnoticed.
