Professional Catheter Care Prevents Serious Infections and Complications

What Catheter Care Involves

Catheter care means supporting a parent who has a urinary catheter (indwelling catheter in the bladder) or a suprapubic catheter (catheter inserted directly into the bladder through the abdomen). Our carers are trained in catheter maintenance — keeping the catheter site clean, monitoring the drainage bag, ensuring the catheter is positioned correctly and not pulled, and recognising signs of infection or blockage. We perform regular catheter washes, empty drainage bags as needed, and maintain detailed records of catheter output — colour, clarity, volume — which help identify urinary tract infections early. For parents unable to manage their own catheter systems, our support is essential for health, dignity, and comfort. We prevent complications like catheter-associated urinary tract infections, blockages, or skin damage around the insertion site.

Preventing Infections and Monitoring Health

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections are common and serious in older adults. They can lead to sepsis, hospitalisation, and death if not recognised. Our carers are trained to spot early signs — changes in urine colour, cloudiness, blood, or offensive smell. We encourage adequate fluid intake, which helps flush the urinary system. We maintain meticulous hygiene, using clean (non-sterile) technique for daily catheter care. We document everything in OpenPass — catheter insertion dates, any issues, changes in output, or concerns. Our care coordinator Stacey Cole, with 17 years in complex care, reviews catheter logs daily. If we see signs of infection, we contact your GP immediately. We also liaise with continence nurses or urology services if your parent has ongoing catheter issues.
