PEG Feeding Support Maintains Nutrition and Prevents Serious Complications

What PEG Feeding Care Involves

PEG feeding support means managing a tube placed directly into your parent’s stomach through the abdomen for nutritional support. This is used when parents cannot swallow safely (following stroke, advanced Parkinson’s, or other conditions) or when they have difficulty eating enough to maintain nutrition. Our trained carers administer feed at the correct rate and volume, check tube position, monitor for signs of aspiration or discomfort, and maintain the tube site cleanly. We also flush the tube with water as prescribed, change dressings as needed, and monitor for signs of infection or blockage. PEG feeding requires detailed knowledge and careful technique to prevent serious complications — aspiration pneumonia, tube blockage, or site infections. Our carers complete specific training in PEG management and are supervised by our care coordinator Stacey Cole with 17 years in complex care.

Maintaining Nutrition and Preventing Complications

Proper PEG feeding maintains your parent’s nutrition and immune function — essential for health and recovery. Improper feeding technique can cause aspiration (food entering the lungs), dehydration, diarrhoea, or blockage. We follow evidence-based protocols for all aspects of PEG feeding. We administer feed at appropriate temperatures and rates. We keep the PEG site clean and check for signs of infection — redness, swelling, discharge, or warmth. We monitor your parent’s tolerance — whether they are gaining or losing weight, whether they are having diarrhoea or constipation, whether they seem uncomfortable. We document all of this in OpenPass, which our care coordinator reviews daily. If we see signs of complications, we contact your GP or hospital immediately. We also arrange for ongoing review of feeding volume and composition with dietitians as needed.
